About ExploreTCGSets

What ExploreTCGSets is, who makes it, where its card data and images come from, and how it stays free.

What this site is

ExploreTCGSets is a free, unofficial fan encyclopedia of trading card game sets. It lists every set of a game in release order and lets you open every card in them. Each game has its own pages, its own look and its own history section.

Right now it covers the Pokémon Trading Card Game (345 English and Japanese sets) and Magic: The Gathering (996 releases). Yu-Gi-Oh!, Disney Lorcana and the One Piece Card Game are planned.

The site started as LearnPokémon (learnpokemon.fun). Every old LearnPokémon address now forwards to its new home under /pokemon/.

Who makes it

ExploreTCGSets is a personal fan project. It is not a company, a store or an official database, and it has no accounts. To reach the person who runs it, write to [email protected].

Where the cards come from

  • Magic: The Gathering: card data, card images and set symbols come from Scryfall, used under its API guidelines. Images load straight from Scryfall and are never altered. Art crops show the artist’s name. Portions of the materials used are property of Wizards of the Coast. ©Wizards of the Coast LLC.
  • Pokémon, English: sets, logos, symbols and card images come from the Pokémon TCG API.
  • Pokémon, Japanese: Japanese set lists come from TCGdex, carried over from LearnPokémon. Japanese card scans load from Pokécardex.
  • Pokédex: species names, types, stats and official artwork come from PokéAPI.
  • Booster photographs: from the ptcg-assets library by 1niceroli, one web-sized packshot per set where one exists.
  • History pages: every Lore page lists the sources its facts come from.

The data is refreshed by scripts that follow each source’s usage guidelines, and checked automatically after every refresh (set counts, card counts, missing images and dates).

Original artwork

The landscapes behind the Magic pages and this home page are drawn by code made for this site. The painted landscapes behind the Pokémon pages are original art made for LearnPokémon. The ExploreTCGSets mark (three fanned cards around a star) is original too. None of these are official artwork or logos.

How it stays free

The site is free to use and always will be. It shows Google AdSense ads to cover its costs, and it uses Google Analytics to count visits. The Privacy Policy and Cookies pages explain both. There are no prices on the site, and nothing on it is for sale.
