How Disney Lorcana began

Disney Lorcana is Ravensburger's first trading card game, made with Disney and released in August 2023. It became one of the fastest-growing card games of its time, and a new chapter has arrived every few months since.

Ravensburger and Disney

Ravensburger, the German company best known for jigsaw puzzles and board games, made Disney Lorcana together with The Walt Disney Company. It was Ravensburger's first trading card game.

The head of Ravensburger North America, Filip Francke, called it "probably the largest investment that we have ever done into any type of project and initiative."

The First Chapter

Ravensburger announced the game in 2022, and promotional cards were handed out at Disney's D23 Expo that year; some of them later resold for between $1,000 and $3,000.

The first set, The First Chapter, reached hobby game stores on 18 August 2023 and large retailers on 1 September 2023. Fans at Gen Con queued for hours for starter decks and booster packs, and high-rarity cards were reselling for hundreds of dollars before the official launch.

A chapter every few months

Sets arrive in hobby stores roughly a week or two before large retailers, about three or four times a year. Each set mixes characters from many Disney and Pixar stories with characters made for the game.

Rarities run Common, Uncommon, Rare, Super Rare and Legendary, with Enchanted cards (full-art versions) above them. Fabled added Epic and Iconic.

Tournaments and formats

The Disney Lorcana Challenge circuit began in May 2024 with events in North America, Europe and Oceania. In its first season more than 17,000 players took part in nearly 150,000 games.

The first European Championship was held at Disneyland Paris in December 2024, the North American Championship at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim in January 2025, and the World Championship at Walt Disney World in Orlando in June 2025, won by Dinh Khang Pham.

In May 2025 Ravensburger announced that the four Year 1 sets would rotate out of the Core Constructed format with the release of Fabled, and introduced Infinity Constructed, where every card ever printed stays legal.
