How to play

0

Take all their Life, then land one more hit

Each time your attack gets through to the other Leader, they lose a Life card. When they have no Life left, one more hit on their Leader wins the game.

∅

Their deck runs out

A player who has no cards left in their deck loses the game.

The six colours

RedRaw power: big Power boosts and fast attacks.
GreenResting the other side's cards and readying your own.
BlueSending cards back to the hand and looking at the deck.
PurpleDON!! tricks: adding, spending and returning DON!! cards.
BlackLowering costs and K.O.ing characters by cost, using the trash.
YellowLife cards and Triggers: turning damage into an advantage.

Every card in a deck must share a colour with its Leader. Some Leaders are two colours.

LifeFace-down cards from the top of the deck, as many as the Leader's Life.
Leader and CharactersYour Leader, and up to five Characters. Rested cards are turned sideways.
Deck50 cards. Draw from the top.
TrashUsed Events and K.O.'d Characters.
Cost areaDON!! cards. Rest them to pay costs, or give them to a card for +1000 Power.
One player's side of the table. The 10 DON!! cards wait in their own DON!! deck.

Kinds of card

Leader

Starts in play and decides your colours and your Life. It can attack every turn, and if it is hit with no Life left, you lose.

Character

Has a cost, a Power and often a Counter value. Attacks from the turn after it is played, unless it has Rush.

Event

A one-time effect. Many are [Counter] Events you play during your opponent's attack.

Stage

A place or ship that stays in play and gives an ongoing effect. You can have one.

DON!!

The game's energy. Two arrive in your cost area each turn, up to ten.

Setting up

  1. Bring a deck. One Leader, 50 cards in the Leader's colours with no more than four of any card number, and 10 DON!! cards.
  2. Put your Leader face up, shuffle, and draw five. Once, you may shuffle your hand back in and draw five new cards.
  3. Deal your Life. Put cards from the top of your deck face down, as many as your Leader's Life. The first player is chosen at random.

Your turn, in order

  1. 1

    Refresh

DON!! given to your cards come back to your cost area, and every rested card is set active.

  2. 2

    Draw

Draw a card. The first player skips this on their first turn.

  3. 3

    DON!!

Put two DON!! from your DON!! deck into your cost area (the first player gets one on their first turn).

  4. 4

    Main

    • Play cards by resting DON!! equal to their cost.
    • Give DON!! to your Leader or Characters: +1000 Power each, this turn.
    • Attack with your Leader and Characters. Nobody attacks on their first turn.
  5. 5

    End

“At the end of your turn” effects happen, then it's your opponent's turn.

An attack, step by step

  1. Attack. Rest your Leader or a Character and pick the other Leader or one of their rested Characters.
  2. Block. The defender may rest a Character with [Blocker] to take the hit instead.
  3. Counter. The defender may trash cards from hand for their Counter value, or play [Counter] Events, to add Power.
  4. Damage. If the attacker's Power is equal or higher, a Character is K.O.'d, or a Leader loses a Life card (it goes to the hand, and its [Trigger] may be used).

Words you will see

Active and rested
Upright cards are active. Resting turns a card sideways to attack or pay a cost.
Power
A card's strength in battle. Higher or equal Power wins an attack.
Counter
A number on many Characters. Trash the card from your hand during an attack on you to add that much Power to the defender.
Trigger
An effect on some cards you may use when the card is turned over from your Life.
Blocker
This Character can be rested to take an attack aimed at another of your cards.
Rush
This Character can attack the turn it is played.
Double Attack
This card takes two Life cards when it hits a Leader.
Banish
Life cards this card takes go to the trash, so no Trigger is used.
K.O.
A Character beaten in battle, or by an effect, goes to the trash.
Blocks and rotation
Each card shows a block number. From April 2026, official Standard tournaments use blocks 2 and later; block 1 cards rotated out, apart from reprints in The Best Vol. 2.

Reading a One Piece card

Every Character card shows the same things in the same places. Here is Nami from the very first booster set, Romance Dawn (OP-01, 2022): a cheap card almost every Straw Hat deck has played.

Nami, Romance Dawn OP01-016
  1. Cost. The number in the circle, top left: 1. Rest that many active DON!! cards to play her.
  2. Power. Top right: 2000. In a battle, the attacker wins if its power is equal or higher. Every DON!! you give her adds 1000 on your turn.
  3. Counter. The sideways number on the left edge: +1000. When you're attacked, trash her from your hand to add 1000 power to the defending card.
  4. Effect. [On Play]: when you play her, look at the top 5 cards of your deck and take a {Straw Hat Crew} card. Timing words in brackets say when an effect happens.
  5. Name, type and attribute. Nami, of the {Straw Hat Crew} type. Many effects care about types ("your {Straw Hat Crew} type Characters…").
  6. Colour. The frame colour: Red. A deck uses only cards that share a colour with its Leader.
  7. Card number and rarity. OP01-016, Rare. A deck can have up to four cards with the same number.

Rarities from common to rare: Common, Uncommon, Rare, Super Rare, Secret Rare, plus Leader cards, alternate-art "parallel" versions, Special cards and the very rare Treasure Rares and manga-art cards.

Every kind of card, and what it does

Roronoa Zoro, Leader

Leader

Starts the game in play, face up. Its colours decide your deck, its Life (Zoro: 5) is how many Life cards you start with, and it can attack every turn from your second turn. Lose all your Life and take one more hit, and the game is over.

Monkey.D.Luffy, Character

Characters

Most of your deck. Play them with DON!!; from your next turn they can attack (unless they have Rush). You can have five in play at once. Most also carry a Counter value for defending from your hand.

Radical Beam!!, Event

Events

One-shot effects that go to the trash. [Main] Events are played on your turn; [Counter] Events are played while you're being attacked (Radical Beam!!: +2000 power to the defender).

Moby Dick, Stage

Stages

Ships and places that stay in play and give a lasting effect. You can have one Stage at a time.

DON!! cards

A separate deck of ten. Two come out each turn (the first player gets one on the first turn). Rest them to pay for cards, or give them to your Leader and Characters for +1000 power each. They all come back at the start of your next turn.

Life cards

Face-down cards from the top of your deck, as many as your Leader's Life. Each hit on your Leader puts the top one into your hand, so getting hit also gives you cards. Some have a [Trigger] you can use for free when they're turned over.

The keywords

These words in brackets come up all the time:

🛡️ [Blocker]

When your opponent attacks, rest this Character to make it the new target.

⚡ [Rush]

Can attack the turn it's played.

✌️ [Double Attack]

A hit on the Leader takes two Life cards.

🔥 [Banish]

Life cards it takes go to the trash, so their Triggers can't be used.

🎴 [On Play]

Happens when you play the card.

⚔️ [When Attacking]

Happens when the card attacks.

💀 [On K.O.]

Happens when the Character is K.O.'d.

🟡 [DON!! x1]

Works only while the card has at least that many DON!! given to it.

▶️ [Activate: Main]

An ability you choose to use on your turn (often [Once Per Turn]).

🛟 [Counter]

An Event you play during your opponent's attack.

🎁 [Trigger]

Free effect when the card is turned over from your Life.

➀ ➁ ➂

Rest that many of your active DON!! cards to use the effect.

Building a deck

A deck is one Leader and exactly 50 cards that share a colour with the Leader, with no more than four cards of the same number, plus your ten DON!! cards. A good starting shape:

1Leader

Pick the Leader first: its colours, Life and ability shape everything else.

38–44Characters

Cheap ones to play from turn one, a strong middle at 4–6 DON!!, and a few big finishers. Plenty should have a Counter.

6–12Events and Stages

Removal (K.O., rest, return to hand), card draw, and Counter Events to survive the big attacks.

What to look for when you collect

  • A Leader you like. Without one there's no deck: every booster set has several.
  • Counters. Cards with +1000 or +2000 Counter are what keep your Leader alive. Aim for at least 15–20.
  • Cheap Characters with an [On Play] effect. They get your board going and find more cards.
  • Removal. K.O. and "return to hand" effects for the opponent's best Characters.
  • Blockers and Triggers. Both help you defend when your Life runs low.

Ready to play?

  1. Start right away with a practice deck. The One Piece Arena deals you a free random Leader and deck from a set. Swap any card you don't like (♻), the Leader too, and play the computer.
  2. Collect your own cards. Open your free Daily PlayPack every day. Every card goes into your PlayBinder.
  3. Play with your PlayBinder. Once your cards make a full deck by themselves (a Leader and 50 cards that share its colours, every one of them pulled in your Play Packs), the Arena builds the best deck your collection allows. One Piece has no free cards to fill a deck with, so this takes a while: until then, practice with a random deck. The Arena shows how close you are.
  4. Climb the ranks. Ten levels from Novice to Grandmaster. Beat one to unlock the next. Every level you beat makes your One Piece streak bonus cards rarer.

The most wanted One Piece cards

Secret Rares, alternate-art parallels and the manga-art versions are what collectors chase most. A few favourites (they can turn up in Play Packs from their sets, just rarely):

  • Shanks, Secret RareShanksRomance Dawn, Secret Rare

The first set's top card, and its manga-art parallel is one of the game's grails.

Zoro attacks, then stands back up to attack again.

  • Monkey.D.Luffy, LeaderMonkey.D.LuffyAwakening of the New Era, Leader

Luffy as one of the Four Emperors.

  • Mr.2.Bon.Kurei, Secret RareMr.2.Bon.Kurei (Bentham)Memorial Collection, Secret Rare

A Secret Rare from the first extra booster, the Memorial Collection.

Collector prices change all the time and depend on condition. Play Packs are just for fun: your PlayBinder cards aren't real cards and can't be sold.

How the Arena plays

The Arena plays the real game: a Leader and 50 cards in its colours, a 5-card opening hand you may redraw once, Life cards, ten DON!! cards arriving two a turn, giving DON!! for +1000 power, attacks on the Leader or rested Characters, Blockers, Counters from your hand and Counter Events, Triggers, and the race to land the last hit. Each card's real cost, power, Counter and Life are used, and so are Blocker, Rush, Double Attack and Banish.

The most common card texts work too: drawing, K.O.s, power changes, resting, returning Characters to the hand or the bottom of the deck, adding and readying DON!!, looking at the top of your deck, and playing Characters from your hand or trash. Card text the Arena can't play yet is still shown on the card: such Events and Stages can't go in a practice deck, and such Characters and Leaders play with their power and keywords. Ongoing effects ([Your Turn], [Opponent's Turn]) and rarer abilities are coming later.
